Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Title 19 five-year fire sprinkler certification?

California Code of Regulations Title 19 requires that automatic fire sprinkler systems receive a comprehensive inspection and test every five years by a licensed C-16 contractor, including an internal inspection of the piping for obstructions and corrosion, replacement or testing of all gauges, and a signed certification (the AES form) that is kept on site and provided to the fire department.

I got a notice from the fire department. How long do I have?

Notices typically give 30 days, and some jurisdictions allow an extension if a contractor is scheduled. Call us right away – we will schedule the inspection, complete the paperwork and, if repairs are needed, give you a quote so you can show the fire department you are in process.

What does the five-year inspection involve?

An internal inspection of the sprinkler piping at the riser, a cross main and a branch line; a check of the FDC and check valves; testing or replacement of all gauges; a main drain test; an obstruction investigation if debris is found; and completion of the Title 19 five-year certification form and tag.

What is LAFD Regulation 4 (Reg 4)?

In the City of Los Angeles, the Fire Department’s Regulation 4 program requires certified testing of fire sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump, fire alarm and other life-safety systems on a set schedule (annual for most systems, five-year for sprinkler internal inspections). Tests must be performed by an LAFD-certified tester and filed with the department. APFE performs Reg 4 testing and filing.

Can you do the five-year inspection and the annual inspection at the same time?

Yes – that is the most economical way to do it. We will complete both and issue both tags on the same visit.
